Janwillem Van de Wetering, R.I.P.

Michael Blowhard writes:

Dear Blowhards --

Just a few days after Thomas Disch's suicide, word comes from Sarah Weinman that another genre-fiction giant has fallen: Janwillem Van de Wetering, dead at 77. I wrote a brief appreciation of Van de Wetering back here. Van de Wetering wasn't just an oddball creator of quirky police procedurals, he was one of my favorite contemporary artist-entertainers. His publisher is the excellent Soho Press. EuroCrime reprints the Radio Netherlands report of his death.

Sad news. I was his editor at Houghton Mifflin for a couple of books and he was a good and decent man.

Could drink well too.

If my name was Janwillem Van de Wetering I coulda been a success too.

Okay, I know that's not nice and I'm sure the guy's accomplishments were great but c'mon, what an advantage to go through life with Janwillem Van de Wetering for a moniker!

Oh no, I didn't hear about Thomas Disch. If it weren't for you Michael, I wouldn't know anything. xo

Jan willem Lincoln van de Wetering was my father I will miss him every day of my life. He was a man greater than life. I will miss his emails.
I am the only one that called him father. And I hope he rest in peace
