Food Linkage

Michael Blowhard writes:

Dear Blowhards --

Odious and Peculiar has a few things he'd like recent Culinary Institute grads to know about. Link thanks to Steve Bodio, who recently wrote a posting that's key reading for meat-eaters. Great Steve line:

"France may be in a decline, but any civilized person must be thankful for its food, wine, and shotguns!"

Don't miss (also via Steve) this lovely LATimes review of Julia Childs' autobiography. Julia Child was, IMHO, a major figure in American culture. Like Jane Jacobs, she was one of those terrific midcentury oddballs who -- at a time when America generally was hurrying down the interstate to plastic-suburbia TV blandness -- helped us rediscover what "quality of life" means, and why it's worth paying attention to.

Best,

Michael

Funny, I just copy-clipped this picture to post in the comments @ your previous post (via LaCoquette)
That's the face you'd like to see on a pig, right Michael? Right before she'll be trasformed into that tasty bacon some
love so much.

Wait, why suddenly my former husband came to mind?

The Smithsonian would seem to agree with you. Julia Childs' kitchen is housed at the National Museum of American History. I saw it a few years back, it's pretty neat.

Odious and Peculiar's assignment of blame to Anthony Bourdain is misplaced. I read Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and he certainly does NOT glamorize the field and lure more people into attending culinary school. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Must echo your sentiments on the wine and food scene in France. Just bought a liter of wine for 1 Euro 35 at Leader Prix. Excellent. Even the French fries are better. I kid you not.

Tat -- Wait, that looks like ... my identical twin!

Claire -- That's great to learn, thanks. I wonder if it's visible on the web. Hmm, I'll go Google ...

Peter -- But isn't there a chance Bourdain's macho debunking made the field even more attractive? Maybe not.

Robert -- You're doing some good living!
