Don't miss (also via Steve) this lovely LATimes review of Julia Childs' autobiography. Julia Child was, IMHO, a major figure in American culture. Like Jane Jacobs, she was one of those terrific midcentury oddballs who -- at a time when America generally was hurrying down the interstate to plastic-suburbia TV blandness -- helped us rediscover what "quality of life" means, and why it's worth paying attention to.

The Smithsonian would seem to agree with you. Julia Childs' kitchen is housed at the National Museum of American History. I saw it a few years back, it's pretty neat.

Odious and Peculiar's assignment of blame to Anthony Bourdain is misplaced. I read Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and he certainly does NOT glamorize the field and lure more people into attending culinary school. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Must echo your sentiments on the wine and food scene in France. Just bought a liter of wine for 1 Euro 35 at Leader Prix. Excellent. Even the French fries are better. I kid you not.
