End of Civilization 1

Michael Blowhard writes:

Dear Blowhards --

One of the coverlines on the current issue of the kicky-young-women's magazine Jane: "Sex Tips So Good, Your Boyfriend Will Want to Pay You."

Best,

Michael

Is this article supposed to be a warning or a recommendation? In the old days they told us that if you are paid for sex, not only have you entered a profession, but also you can expect to become shopworn. The theory was that men (or, I suppose, these days women) pay for sex in order to be excused from any further obligation or emotional connection. Some have interpreted that as freedom, a point of view now out-of-date.

We now know about such expensive lifelong problems as AIDS or Hep C and the interest society will have in tracking down carriers. Nor is a John anonymous anymore, since his DNA provides a calling card. Even his diseases will have a DNA signature.

Jane's coverline should read: "S*x tricks so good your John will want to pay you." And Jane needs a good kick in the ... no, too many people enjoy that sort of thing these days. Some will even pay to be kicked, to be killed.

Oops! Francis Morrone's best woman friend is the publisher of JANE.

I think the operative words here are "want to pay you." Not "will pay you" or "should pay you." I think it is probably a poor choice of words, but it might be akin to "an Italian meal so good, you could charge your guests!" or something like that.
