In which a group of graying eternal amateurs discuss their passions, interests and obsessions, among them: movies, art, politics, evolutionary biology, taxes, writing, computers, these kids these days, and lousy educations.

Free Reads -- Bohemian Porn

Friedrich --

Remember Maurice Girodias? Legendary French publisher of porn novels? (As well as the guy who finally brought out "Lolita.") It turns out that the erotica he published was written by a small circle of arty bohemian friends -- ah, Paris back in the early '50s. John Preston tells the story and tracks down a few of the surviving authors for the Telegraph, here.

Sample passage:

But however easy he found it to crank out the books, the writing did soon lose its appeal. "You have no idea what it's like writing one sex scene after another," he says in a heartfelt voice.

"Trying all the time for new permutations. Believe me, it can really get you down. Occasionally I found it erotic, when I was really getting into a scene. Most of the time, though, I just thought about the money."

Ah, thinking about the money while writing about sex. Perhaps the kinkiest perversion of all!

Doing something you love for a living, or at least putting to use a side of things that you love for the sake of making some money -- it's always a conundrum...
