Ripped From the Pages of Friedrich's Sketchbooks...

Michael:

This little doodle dates from the era when my girls were young enough that I had both Barbie dolls and little wooden train cars lying around when I went looking for something to draw. Technically, this is mildly interesting because there’s no linear under-drawing involved; it was all done with overlapping patches of acrylic paint, in which an original shape could be corrected only by changing the shapes around it. I remember it more for it's rather sinister mood: I remember that as I was painting away, it started dawning on me that that Barbie, in contrast to the straightforward, four-square train car, was a bit of a schemer.

As is fairly obvious from the background it was painted at night; I guess somehow a certain late night cynicism worked its way into the painting. Sorry, Barbie.

Cheers,

Friedrich

It's a darn good thing she's a doll cuz otherwise she'd need her hips replaced to sit at that angle to her spine.

My daughter had problems keeping her Barbie's heads on--something I found to be symbolic, somehow.

Deb--Ioved your comment. My older brothers always put my Barbie's head on backwards. Not quite sure what they were saying...

Ack! In Acrylic? The hated medium? The paint that dries into a thick plastic gloo within seconds. You have much more patience than me, all my acyrills turn into gloppy messes.

Why I keep to ink and watercolor.

Bravo! This captures Barbie as I remember her.
