In which a group of graying eternal amateurs discuss their passions, interests and obsessions, among them: movies, art, politics, evolutionary biology, taxes, writing, computers, these kids these days, and lousy educations.

Aspie Links

Michael Blowhard writes:

Dear Blowhards --

* I've been enjoying the blogpostings of Astryngia, a British woman who wrestles with a heavy dose of Asperger's in her life. Her mom, her husband, and her son are all Aspies -- that has got to be seriously challenging. Astryngia is blunt, honest, and insightful about her struggles and frustrations.

* Did you know that 2006 is International Asperger's Year?

Best,

Michael

Asperger's is said to be quite common among railfans, and indeed the railfan forum that I frequent seems to be have a few regulars who are, well, _off_.

"Off" is a good word for them. I don't know why, but I'm not surprised that the railfan world would be populated by a good number of Aspies. Evidently many are given to intense interests in oddball subjects ... How do you find it dealing with them? I think the hardest thing is to remember that they don't mean anything by their "off" behavior. There's no agenda, and they can't really (or shouldn't really) be read in conventional-human ways. They just have their own, slightly strange ways of going about things ...

No.

Astryngia defined. I like! Thanks for your understanding.

As for 'off' - it's a lot easier when they have insight into their 'difference'. Either way, just think 'Mr Spock' and you'll be half way to empathising with their 'take' on the world. A most honourable 'species'! Frustrating beyond words!!!

The poem, A Martian Sends a Postcard Home by Roger McGough offers a little insight into what their world must be like.
