Music Tips

Michael Blowhard writes:

Dear Blowhards --

WhiskyPrajer, Cowtown Pattie and DarkoV have been listing some of their favorite tear-jerkin' songs. WP also waxes enthusiastic about T-Bone Burnett, whose work (as a performer and a producer) I like a lot. The Patriarch is digging Neko Case. Elvis Costello has some music recommendations too.

Best,

Michael

UPDATE: DarkoV lets me know that he'll be spinning and broadcasting the heartbreaker tunes that WhiskyPrajer, Cowtown Pattie and he have selected on the Internet this Sunday morning, from 9 to 12, here.

Michael,
Multo bene for your kind mention. I do a volunteer dj-ing gig at the University of Delaware every 3-4 weeks on Sunday morning. Through sheer luck of timing, I'll be doing the morning 9-12 show this weekend. We can play whatever we want, so I had already been planning on playing the heartbreakers Whisky Prajer, Cowtown Pattie, and I had come up with. So, if anyone wants to hear these songs, they can tune in on the Internet this Sunday morning, from 9 to 12 at http://www.wvud.org/listen_online.htm

Again, much thanks for your inclusion!

I'll be there!

Neko Case has great taste and a heavenly voice. But. And it is a major "but". She cannot write a catchy song. If you like her formless mood pieces, and I wish I could, then good on ya. But when she covers other people's songs, she is incredible. I have a dozen or so songs by her on my iTunes that are covers. They are all in the top 25 most played. She had a very scarce album called Canadian Amp that is all covers. There is a song on there called Andy that is superb. Most of her live album The Tigers Have Spoken is covers, and it is her best album as a result. If I had limitless amounts of money, I'd pay to have her record about 15 classic country and pop songs with her excellent touring band and her excellent background singers Kelly Hogan and Carolyn Mark and that would probably be the best record of the decade, if not of all time. She's that good. But she needs to let someone else write the songs.

WhiskyPrajer started the tearjerkin' song roundup, and I have had a great time playing along. Amazing what great music you might have missed, thanks to these two nice bloggers, I have certainly increased my music library with some delicious tunes.

I don't think I have finished my 10 song lineup, got sidetracked for a bit - my life story.

Thanks for the mention!

Wow, I couldn't disagree more with Lex about Case's songwriting. In fact, it was one of the things that struck me as unique, someone with such an amazing voice and ability to interpret standards who can also write fantastic songs. Check out No Need to Cry from the album Furnace Room Lullaby. Great stuff.

And thanks for the mention, Los Blowhards.
