More Francis

A pause in the usual flow of things to deliver a public-service announcement: Francis Morrone will be co-giving a lecture-and-walking-tour course at New York's Institute for Classical Architecture. The very tempting title: "What You've Always Wanted to Know About Architecture But Were Afraid to Ask." I'll be attending myself.

Lectures will be on two Mondays, November 15 and 22, from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. The walking tour will take place on Saturday, December 11, between 1:00pm – 3:00pm. The phone number for reservations is (212) 730-9646; the Institute's webpage is here.

Darn. I wish I could be there.

The problem with the modern architectural establishment, of course, is that it is too elitist. So if you want to present an alternative viewpoint, why charge $200 for this kind of thing?

Felix.
Why do you fall into slough of anti-elitism?
I actually have no idea what you mean with such a statement: "...modern architectural establishment, of course, is that it is too elitist." But it sounds like cant.

The problem with the "modern architectural establishment" -- assuming that there is one -- is simply that it makes bad decisons, not that it exists and is an "elite."

Such blanket attacks on "elites" are, as I see them, bogus and empty.

I admire your way of thinking and that's why I ask you to clarify. What are you talking about?

To me, knocking "elistism" is about as meaningless a criticism as possible; I expect better of you.

In the alternative, should we all be seeking mediocrity and low quality?

Of course I agree that $200 is rather steep but then again, Morrone has lots to say.

Sorry, David, I was being sarcastic.

Sorry, Felix, it obviously went right over my head.

I gave a copy of the program to my foot doctor, who is an architecture buff.He offered io sell me a new pair of orthotics so that he would be able to afford to go. I do think the ICA is one
of the most tiresomely snobbish and elitist
establishments (propagating a "We are better than everyone else" approach that makes me want to flee back to my native Greenwich Village.) Nevertheless, this has not prevented
me from attending a lecture or two there on
occasion.

How about a different conference title:

"Everything you've always known about architecture but were afraid to talk about"
