In which a group of graying eternal amateurs discuss their passions, interests and obsessions, among them: movies, art, politics, evolutionary biology, taxes, writing, computers, these kids these days, and lousy educations.

Free Views -- Business Card Art

Friedrich --

A charmer: Hugh Macleod's website, here, where he shows off his one-of-a-kind artform -- art on the back of business cards. Using a Rotring technical pen, he makes little drawings, writes a few words, scribbles some patterns. I see a little Ralph Steadman, a little Saul Steinberg, a little John Callahan -- this is fine-art cartooning, basically -- and I like it a lot. I'm hoping he won't mind my posting an example of his work. Click on the image for a bigger view.

Thanks to Thomas Hobbs (here), and Out of Lascaux (here).

Best,

Michael

Not quite one of a kind, I knew a UC Berkeley Art Dept. grad student who did business card art, but in a uniquely Berkeley kind of way. He produced sheets of LSD in business card format with an original drawing occupying the entire sheet, not just one little picture repeated on each hit. "Business Card Acid" was his name for it, and you got an un-perforated non-drug soaked one as a souvenir (sp?) with each purchase!

Quite good, and very strange psychedelic art was his forte, he was a tall red-head who's father was a diplomat on station in China for most of his childhood, and was amazingly bi-cultural and multilingual (English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian and various others).

For obvious reasons I'm witholding his name and mine.

This was in the early '90s LSD revival. Isn't capitalism grand! :-)

Now there's Pop Art for you.
