I don't know about you, but I by and large took a break from the blogosphere over the past few weeks. I thought I'd spend the holiday relatively electronics-free -- sharpen the appetite, refresh the mind (such as it is these middle-aged days), etc. And, what do you know, I'm enjoying my plunge back in. Some treats I've stumbled across so far:

AC Douglas (here), being brainy and provocative on that ever-vexing topic, high cult vs. popular cult. Is it really just a matter of personal taste?

Another excellent art-history lesson from Out of Lascaux (here). In this one, Alexandra compares and contrasts three different treatments of the same motif, The Ecstasy of St. Francis.

I normally don't comment much about politics, partly out of deference to those with more expertise, partly out of lack of interest, partly out of pure pusillanimity. Sheesh, as if tempers don't flare enough in the culture sphere! But Peter Briffa's short posting about Germaine Greer (here) shouldn't be missed. (Greer has evidently made some hare-brained remark about how men try to "tame" the female orgasm. I know there's nothing I like doing with my spare time better than taming a female orgasm. Hell, some days, I wake up so full of vim and vigor that I go out and tame a couple of 'em!)

Hey, did I ever tell you about one time I got a stern talking-to from a female work colleague? I guess I'd been irreverent about some sexual-politics thing. And she glared at me and told me in the most solemn possible terms that it's simply a fact that men use the threat of rape to keep women in their place. I couldn't really figure out how best to respond, given that this woman was my boss... [Bad-joke drum thump here. But it's a true story.]

Briffa's a reliably hilarious (in the gonzo-caustic mode) political commentator, by the way. And if I felt any guilt about reading him regularly, I'd recommend his blog, PublicInterest, as a guilty pleasure.

Hmm. I wonder if I'm making any sense. Well, however convoluted my brain and language are becoming, I'm intending high praise.
